Jwaneng Mine, Botswana

E-TEK assisted Jwaneng Mine with the design, implementation and monitoring of the rehabilitation trials on the Waste Rock Dump (WRD). The rehabilitation trials consist of two primary trial areas, namely the WRD side slopes and the WRD top surface. Each trial area incorporates a series of main treatments and sub-treatments that enable direct comparison of different rehabilitation approaches under varying site conditions.

Years Involved

Since 2018, Jwaneng Mine has undertaken a series of specialist studies to support rehabilitation planning and closure decision-making for the Waste Rock Dump (WRD). These studies addressed the key physical, chemical, ecological, and engineering considerations needed to design, implement, and evaluate rehabilitation trials. The specialist studies where E-TEK assisted included:


  • Soil Erosion Studies

  • Soil Chemistry (Amelioration Specifications)

  • Vegetation Assessments

  • Waste Rock Dump Design

  • Landform Modelling

  • Stormwater Management Designs (Limited to the WRD)

  • Rehabilitation Trials Plan

  • Rehabilitation Trials Assurance and Training.


Together, the outcomes of these studies provided the technical basis for implementing large-scale rehabilitation trials on both the side slopes and top surface of the WRD.


The trials were designed to assess the effectiveness of different growth medium configurations, soil amelioration programmes, vegetation establishment techniques, and stormwater management measures. They are intended to generate practical information that can be used to validate the rehabilitation methodologies proposed during the planning phase, identify opportunities for optimisation, and refine future rehabilitation specifications and closure planning for Jwaneng Mine. The trials comprise two primary areas: the WRD side slopes and the WRD top surface. Each area includes a series of main treatments and sub-treatments, allowing different rehabilitation approaches to be compared under varying site conditions.


Implementation commenced in August 2025 and was completed at the end of January 2026. During this period, the implementation process generated valuable practical insights relating to the procurement and application of ameliorants and seed, as well as lessons learnt during construction and early establishment.

Throughout implementation, E-TEK conducted site visits at critical stages to assess compliance with the approved trial plan, provide technical guidance, and support the mine personnel and contractors responsible for implementation.


E-TEK also provided detailed technical training and assurance support during the establishment of the rehabilitation trials, helping to promote consistent implementation and alignment with the intended trial objectives.
