About
Groundwater is one of our most valuable natural resources and proper management of this resource is the key to sustainability. South Africa is classified as a water scarce country with extreme climatic conditions and evaporation rates that often exceed precipitation. According to the DWS (2019) South Africa is projected to have a 17% Water supply deficit by 2030. Increasing strain will be placed on alternative water resources such as groundwater, as the reliability of surface waters deteriorate.
E-TEK provides our clients the guidance and expertise on utilizing groundwater resources sustainably, while complying with the legislative requirements as stated by the National Water Act of 1998. At E-TEK Consulting we understand that groundwater is an essential water resource that is critical in contributing to the country’s water security and universal access to water and sanitation. Our field of services include the following:
Water Use Licence Applications
E-TEK facilitates water use license applications (WULA) to ensure compliance with the National Water Act,1998 and relevant Municipal bylaws. Technical reports are compiled by our specialist team and submitted to the DWS to complete the application process. E-TEK’s specialist team can assist with:
Water Use Licence Applications
General Authorisation applications.
Water Use Licence Amendment Applications
Water Use Licence Compliance Monitoring
Groundwater Monitoring
In a general sense the quality of groundwater should be safe to dink, however it could be affected by the underground environment and other anthropogenic factors. The monitoring of groundwater quality and quantity is thus important to ensure the water is suitable for its specific purpose and is utilized sustainably. E-TEK’s specialist team can assist with:
Monitoring of seasonal water level and quality fluctuations for any borehole.
Water quality testing through a SANS accredited laboratory
Groundwater quality assessment
Groundwater flow predictions
Establishing of Wellhead protection zones
Hydro-census and Water Quality Baseline Studies
E-TEK’s specialist team conducts field studies that involves gathering information on water features, water supply sources and sources of potential water pollution through the evaluation of:
Groundwater Quality,
Borehole specifications (Depth, Location and Casing),
Observations regarding the yield and equipping of boreholes.
Existing surface and groundwater use
Regional water levels
Environmental receptors
Desktop Studies of Site Geology and Hydrogeology
Utilizing the latest GIS technology E-TEK’s specialist team can provide a comprehensive overview of site geology and hydrogeological aspects. This includes the classification of aquifers that may be present, determining regional groundwater levels and flow paths, possible geological features present i.e., Faults and Dikes, water sources and topography. From these studies E-TEK’s specialist team can assist with:
Aquifer Classification
Vulnerability assessments
Data interpretation
Establishing Groundwater flow directions
